The College of Medicine at University of Alkafeel organized a scientific workshop : “From Plant to Extract: Steps in Extracting Active Compounds.” Presented by Asst. Lect. Amin Abdul-Ridha Amin on Wednesday, 6 May 2026, the workshop aimed to develop the scientific and laboratory skills of freshman students and introduce them to the fundamentals of extracting bioactive compounds and their medical and research applications.
The workshop covered the practical and scientific aspects of extracting active compounds from plants, starting with collecting plant samples and selecting suitable parts, through drying and grinding processes to increase extraction efficiency, and culminating in the use of various solvents and diverse extraction techniques. The workshop also included explanations of filtration, concentration, and extraction processes for obtaining pure extracts, and a review of some modern methods for purifying bioactive compounds, supporting scientific research and pharmaceutical applications.
The workshop concluded with several recommendations : enhancing their laboratory skills and encouraging their interest in research on medicinal plants. It also emphasized the importance of supporting scientific applications in the field of bioactive compound extraction and the need to continue organizing practical workshops that bridge theory and practice and develop their research competence .
