The College of Medicine at University of Alkafeel organized a scientific lecture : “Delayed Diagnosis in Surgical Emergencies: Why Do We Fail?” presented by Dr. Haider Abdul-Zahra Jabbar on Saturday, 9 May 2026. The lecture aimed to highlight the importance of early diagnosis in surgical emergencies and to explain the reasons for delays in diagnosis and their impact on patient safety and the quality of healthcare.
The lecture addressed the importance of early and accurate diagnosis in surgical emergencies and its role in reducing morbidity and mortality rates. It focused on the challenges that lead to delayed diagnosis and the resulting serious complications, particularly in cases of acute appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, and internal bleeding.
The lecture also reviewed factors related to the patient, the physician, and the healthcare system that may contribute to delayed diagnosis. Furthermore, it discussed the impact of similar clinical symptoms in some cases on the accuracy of medical assessment. The lecture emphasized the importance of enhancing clinical competence and improving mechanisms for managing emergency cases to ensure patient safety and reduce complications associated with delayed diagnosis.
