The College of Pharmacy at University of Alkafeel, through its Lifelong Learning Unit and in cooperation with the Clinical Pharmacy Department, organized a scientific lecture : Medication Safety. The event was delivered by Instructor Ahmed Kadhim Abdul in the Al-Balaghy Hall at the College of Pharmacy on Sunday, 22 February 2026.
The lecture aimed to raise awareness of the concept of medication safety and its importance in healthcare institutions. It also aimed to identify the most common medication errors that may occur during prescribing, dispensing, or administering medication, explain their causes, and discuss ways to reduce them, thereby contributing to minimizing treatment risks and improving the quality of healthcare.
The lecture included a comprehensive explanation of the concept of medication safety and its role in protecting patients from medication errors. It highlighted common causes of these errors :poor communication, similarity in drug names, and non-compliance with approved protocols. There was also a set of guidelines and preventative measures to promote a culture of safety in healthcare institutions. Then the lecturer recommended adhering to medication safety guidelines, strengthening the role of the clinical pharmacist in monitoring medication treatment, and conducting ongoing training courses to reduce errors. He also emphasized the importance of adopting a safe and non-punitive system for reporting errors, which would contribute to improving performance quality and enhancing coordination between medical and pharmaceutical staff.
